We are saddened to announce the passing of life member, past president, and saltwater cowboy Billy Ray Bunting
By CHINCOTEAGUE VOLUNTEER FIRE CO.
May 15, 2026
With over 55 years of service he has served over half of our existence but his most notable role was one he shared with his brother of being a Saltwater Cowboy. When Billy Ray started as a cowboy they were referred to as Gum Boot Cowboys because most riders opted for waterproof rubber boots during the roundups.
Billy Ray will be missed but his steadfast mindset, pride in the island, and dedication to this fire department will not be forgotten.
