Chincoteague Division of Emergency Medical Services (CEMS)

The Town of Chincoteague Division of Emergency Medical Services (CEMS) delivers 24-hour Advanced Life Support (ALS) coverage to the residents and visitors of Chincoteague Island. Services are provided by a dedicated staff consisting of three full-time and one part-time ALS provider.

CEMS operates under the Town of Chincoteague Department of Emergency Services, alongside the Division of Emergency Management. The agency’s primary service area spans approximately 57 square miles, encompassing residential neighborhoods, commercial areas, marshlands, woodlands, coastal waters, and seashores.

In partnership with the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company Rescue Squad, CEMS ensures the seamless delivery of Advanced Life Support and patient transport services. Operations are based at Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department, Station 3, located at 5052 Deep Hole Road, Chincoteague Island, VA 23336. Full-time medics work a 24-hour on/72-hour off rotation from this location.

CEMS also provides emergency medical response coverage to Assateague Island and supports U.S. Coast Guard search and rescue operations as requested. Mutual aid is extended to and received from neighboring mainland jurisdictions to ensure regional emergency response capabilities.

Community Health & Outreach

CEMS is committed to community engagement and public health. Citizens and visitors are welcome to visit Station 3 daily from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. for complimentary blood pressure and blood glucose screenings, subject to crew availability. Station tours of the Station 3 Firehouse and its emergency apparatus are also offered.

Organizations or community groups interested in hosting a guest speaker on health, safety, or emergency medical topics may contact the Director of Emergency Services to arrange a presentation.
